1, 4 DIOXANE

A synthetic, colorless liquid with a faint sweet odor, used as a stabilizer or solvent. 

Health Risks Include: Eye and lung irritant. Exposure may cause damage to the central nervous system, liver and kidneys. Currently classified as a probable carcinogen.

 

ANIMAL-DERIVED INGREDIENTS 

Though not necessarily toxic, animal-derived ingredients do contribute to animal suffering and environmental suffering, while also posing health risks. At Petit Vour, we believe animal-free alternatives perform just as well as their animal-derived counterparts without the long-reaching ill effects. 

Animal By-Products Include: allantonin, animal fats, hairs and oils, bee products, biotin, bone char, carmine, collagen, gelatin, guanine, hyaluronic acid, keratin, lactic acid, lanolin, lecithin, milk protein, pearl, musk, silk, squalene, stearic acid, tallow, etc. 

Please note: Some ingredients can be derived from animals OR plants. Rest assured, we have incredibly thorough brand contracts with all of our brand partners that forbid products containing animal-derived ingredients be sold to Petit Vour.

 

BHA  

A preservative stabilizer.

Health Risks Include: Possible human carcinogen, endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation.

 

CARBON BLACK 

Carbon Black is a color composed of finely divided particles of elemental carbon obtained by the incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons.

Health Risks Include: Organ system toxicity

 

DIOXIN 

You won’t see this word listed on the ingredient label, but if you are buying cotton balls, facial tissue, toilet tissue, sanitary pads and tampons (all of which have very close contact with your body) you may be exposed to them.

Health Risks Include: Endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity, persistence in bioaccumulation, irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs).

 

ETHANOL-AMINE COMPOUNDS (DEA/TEA/MEA)

A chemical group of amino acids and alcohols. Used as fragrance, emulsifiers and pH adjusters.

Health Risks Include: Cancer, bioaccumulation, organ system toxicity

 

FD&C COLOR/PIGMENTS

Chemical colors and dyes derived from coal or tar, which are petroleum by-products.

Health Risks Include: Persistence and bioaccumulation, Organ system toxicity

 

FORMALDEHYDE & FORMALDEHYDE-RELEASING INGREDIENTS

Formaldehyde is a carcinogenic impurity released by a number of cosmetic preservatives, including diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, quaternium-15, 2-bromo-2-nitripropane-1,3-diol, and sodium hydroxylmethylglycinate.

Health Risks Include: Organ system toxicity

 

FRAGRANCE/PARFUM

The word “fragrance” or “parfum” on the product label represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and ingredients used as fragrance dispersants such as diethyl phthalate.

Health Risks Include: Miscellaneous (due to actual ingredients being undisclosed), irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), organ system toxicity

 

HOMOSALATE

Homosalate is a common sunscreen ingredient.

Health Risks Include: Contamination concerns, organ system toxicity, enhanced skin absorption leading to endocrine disruption.

 

HYDROQUINONE

Hydroquinone is an aromatic organic compound.

Health Risks Include: Organ system toxicity

 

LEAD, MERCURY & CADMIUM

Heavy metals that are notably toxic, often a by-product of industrial waste. 

Health Risks Include: Organ system toxicity, persistent and bioaccumulative.

 

METHYLISOTHIAZOLINONE & METHYLCHLOROISOTHIAZOLINONE

Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone are widely-used preservatives.

Health Risks Include: Eye, skin, and lung irritation.

 

NAIL POLISH REMOVER INGREDIENTS (ACETONE, MIBK, MEK, NMP) Conventional nail polish removers contain toxic solvents to remove nail polish.

Health Risks Include: Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), organ system toxicity

 

p-PHENYLENEDIAMINE

p-Phenylenediamine is an ingredient widely used in hair dyes.

Health Risks Include: Irritation of skin, eyes, or lungs, organ system toxicity.

 

PARABENS

Parabens are preservatives that mimic estrogen and can act as potential hormone (endocrine) system disruptors.

Health Risks Include: Endocrine disruption, biochemical or cellular-level changes.

 

PETROLEUM & PETROLEUM-DERIVED INGREDIENTS (Mineral Oil, PEG, Petrolatum) 

Mineral Oil is a liquid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. Petrolatum is a semisolid mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from petroleum. PEG is a petroleum-based compound widely used as a thickener, solvent or moisture-carrier.

Health Risks Include: Organ system toxicity, contamination concerns.

 

PHTHALATES

The State of California and other authoritative bodies have classified dibutyl phthalate (BP) as a reproductive and developmental toxicant.

Health Risks Include: Endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation; exposure to DBP during gestation causes infertility, cryptorchidism and problems in sperm development, adverse effects similar to human testicular dysgenesis syndrome. Prenatal exposure to DBP has been associated with anatomical changes in the reproductive system development in baby boys. In adult men, DBP has been correlated with changes in serum hormone levels, lower sperm concentration and motility, and decreased fertility.

 

PLACENTAL EXTRACT

This ingredient is derived from the placenta, an organ that develops in female mammals during pregnancy, lining the uterine wall and attached by the umbilical cord to provide nourishment and oxygen to the fetus.

POLYACRYLAMIDE

Polyacrylamide is a synthetic polymer of acrylamide.

Health Risks Include: Contamination concerns, persistence and bioaccumulation, organ system toxicity.

 

PROPYLENE GLYCOL

Propylene glycol is a small organic alcohol commonly used as a skin conditioning agent. 

Health Risks Include: Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), organ system toxicity.

 

PTFE (TEFLON) 

PTFE is a polymer of tetrafluoroethylene, known under the brand name Teflon.

Health Risks Include: Contamination concerns (Perfluorooctanoic acid: persistence and bioaccumulation.) 

 

RESORCINOL

This ingredient is common in hair color and bleaching product.

Health Risks Include: endocrine disruption, irritation of skin,eyes, and lungs, organ system toxicity.

 

SODIUL LAURYL(ETHER) SULFATE (SLS, SLES)

Sodium Laureth Sulfate is and ingredient derived from ethoxylated lauryl alcohol and used as a surfactant.

Health Risks Include: Contamination concerns (1,4-Dioxane), eye, skin and lung irritation, organ system toxicity.

 

SUNSCREEN INGREDIENTS (OCTINOXATE, OXYBENZONE, PABA)

This common sunscreen ingredient is shown to have hormone-mimicking effects.

Health Risks Include: Biochemical or cellular level changes, endocrine disruption, persistence and bioaccumulation, enhanced skin absorption, organ system toxicity.

 

TOLUENE & TOLUENE-BASED INGREDIENTS 

A volatile petrochemical solvent and paint thinner, toluene is a potent neurotoxicant.

Health Risks Include: Contamination concerns, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Organ system toxicity, persistence and bioaccumulation 

 

TRICLOSAN

Triclosan is an antibacterial agent and preservative used in personal care and home-cleaning products.

Health Risks Include: Contamination concerns, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Persistence and bioaccumulation, Endocrine disruption, Organ system toxicity,
